My Independence

I am so happy because I am about to get my power wheelchair back. I could jump for joy because now I can go anywhere without someone pushing me. Before, I had a regular chair that someone had to push for me. I greatly appreciate everyone who pushed me around in it. Now that I don’t have to depend on anyone anymore, I want to thank them, especially my family and my boyfriend. I never thought that people would be so nice to a woman in a wheelchair, but I was wrong. People see me and they see my disability. But my family, my boyfriend, and my closest friends who have known me for a long time don’t.

I want to thank my teacher, Winsome, because she understands that I don’t have my wheelchair to get around. She told me one thing. She said, “Donica, I want you to get back your power wheelchair so you can come back to class.” Thank you, Winsome, for hosting the class online for me. I really appreciate it. You are an amazing role model for everyone who attempts learning. You are so beautiful and nice to everyone who is at the learning center. You are my role model. I hope you don’t mind that I call you a beautiful role model to me and everyone who goes to Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Adult Learning Center.

To my tutor, Whitney, I want to thank you too because you are the cause behind my learning to read and write better. You are the best tutor I have ever known. You are the real reason that I decided to become a movie-script writer. That is why I am thankful for you.

To my program, I want to thank you because you were right there when I didn’t have my power wheelchair. That is why I am thankful for you. To all of the learning center staff, I am thankful for you, too.
