Multilingual Theatre In Practice: Accessibility vs. Authenticity
“Multilingual Theatre in Practice” is a creative research project focusing on the writer’s own creation of multilingual drama, weighing the linguistic accessibility to a wider audience and the authenticity to their mother tongue. Dissecting the dramaturgy of linguistic and cultural code-switching, both surtitles and non-translation have their own merits in contributing to the narrative of a theatrical piece. This project argues that multilingual theatre should not be limited to the issue of translation; rather, it should be an invitation to the audience to engage in a decolonial detaching practice from Western–centric discourse into a transcultural narrative.
