BOOM! Consciousness Comics: Contemporary Documentations of Mental Health and Identity

Presentation Video

“BOOM! Consciousness Comics” is a two-part project combining mental health research with comic-making. The first part of the project entails a review of the works of writers and artists exploring questions of consciousness, including Clem and Olivier Martini’s “Bitter Medicine”, Ellen Forney’s “Marbles”, Floyd Tangeman’s “Miasma Myopia”, and Ian Hacking’s writings on social constructivism. Annika then created a zine-length comic entitled “Deathpowers”, which exemplifies a comic-making methodology fore-fronting individual agency in mental health narratives while resisting biomedical reductionism.
