Lesbian Periodicals Now & Then: How Media Informs Community
I noticed similarities between a subsection of lesbian newsletters from the 1940s through the 1990s, and lesbian blogs on the early Internet. Both the newsletter and the blog are informal, inherently queer and underground mediums, distributed and or shared personally to relatively small audiences. My project explored the history of and the similarities between these two types of media, and addresses the specific question of how elements intrinsic to blogging and the newsletter created the kinds of spaces lesbians have been able to inhabit at two moments in recent history.
