Namirah Zihniah (MA ’24) (she/Her)
Indonesian Women in Internationally Distributed Films
This project explores the representation of women in the Indonesian film industry. Given the current state of globalized media and entertainment, especially mainstream films, which is a critical medium for representation that people associate with, Namirah believes that big players in the media and entertainment industry are not representing a diverse enough group, both in quantity and quality, for a global audience that obviously demands it. As a case study, Namirah looks at the internationally distributed Indonesian women-led films, where there is an increase in quantity, but not as much in the quality of the characters’ tropes, storylines, and portrayals.
