I have to leave my home at 7 a.m.
I have a meeting with my boss at 8 a.m.
I can’t arrive late. It’s very important: It smells like a promotion.

Secret Identity
I guess it’s true,
What my life is like for now.
Just chilling, drinking coffee,
Thinking, and praising God.
Unexpected Moment
Due to the pandemic, most of the libraries had been closed since March 2020. The closest library would be open from July 1, 2021, which was the most exciting news we heard that summer. One sunny morning, my son and I happily went to this library, laughing all the way. But it was 9:45 a.m., too early; it would open at 10 a.m.
Dimes
Since I came to this country, flat and round copper angels have been following me around. I call them angel dimes; they have been my emotional support. I don’t remember exactly the first day that I had my first encounter with one of these beautiful pieces of copper. All I know is that every time I find one, it is always on the reverse side.
I Will Walk My Steps; I Will Leave My Footprints
For me, wearing shoes symbolizes the possibility of walking and beginning new adventures. Of course, we do not need to walk to do great things. Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican painter, who could not walk for some time, wrote, “Pies, para que los quiero si tengo alas para volar?” (Feet, what do I need them for if I have wings to fly?) Indeed, we do not need feet to do great things.
Corruption
Corruption is of the devil
that destroys the world
in a delightful way.
Presents!
It is pleasant to choose them, it is pleasant to give them, and it is pleasant to receive them. And here is the question: “What is the most significant gift?”
Scars of Hope
If I could sit face-to-face with my younger self, I would hold her tight and tell her, “You’re wonderful!” I would give her a hug that runs through her entire bloodstream and thus awakens each absent-minded neuron, each sad hormone, and each organ silenced due to stress.
Remember
* remember that it will always be worthwhile to keep walking remember that sometimes giving it all will be worth it but always remember not to climb by trampling others remember you are great when you help always remember that you are much stronger than you think remember that despite everything, you are still standing …
Joy
* I am almost 50 years old, but I still feel like a little girl inside. My husband and I have been in love for 20 years now. I know it’s not a very popular choice, but we have decided to walk the path of our lives alone, without children. Probably some circumstances have influenced …
The Yellow Bucket
* I think I have lost a lot of objects in my life. A scarf, a necklace, an earring . . . I accidentally dropped them somewhere and never found them again. Every time I lose something it simply hurts at first, but later, an odd image comes to my mind: an octopus nestling in a yellow bucket …
Jump Rope
A rope may appear like an ordinary object to others, but it has a different meaning to me. A rope reawakened my childhood memories.
Where I Am From: Bosnia and Herzegovina
On my immigration journey, the most common question people ask me out of curiosity is: “Where are you from?” Such a long name for such a small country, I say to myself every time someone asks me that question. I was raised in one part of the geographical location of the former Yugoslavia that some people named Bosnia and Herzegovina, or BiH. A long name, indeed, for a country with a population of less than half of New York City’s.
Question Everything
In my life, I have heard many phrases that make a lot of noise in my head and sound loud. They are phrases or expressions that today, at 25 years of age, I no longer have consideration for. I no longer pay attention to them. However, I know that other young people who have grown up with these poor ideas have not had the opportunity to see, hear, or question other realities completely different from those society imposes.
Get What You Give
It was a sunny and peaceful day in Washington, D.C. I was walking from the U.S. Department of State building to the hotel where I was staying. Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name, “Hey, Vusala!” I stood and tried to find where the sound was coming from. Then I heard my name again from very close to me. I was shocked. It was a surprise to me that someone recognized me in Washington, where I was visiting for the first time. I looked where the sound came from.
