Melchior Tamisier-Fayard: Final interviews

Basic Guide to Using A Japanese Air Conditioner

Through a lot of snowballing and reaching out, I was able to conduct my final interviews, and started working on putting my research together. After having had all these conversations, it was interesting to sit down and piece together the various narratives I had gathered and learned throughout the summer. With the Covid-19 situation making socializing much more difficult, some of the people I contacted seemed much more eager to talk, and it was a pleasant experience just conversing with strangers. This whole experience has made me realize how more enjoyable it could be to ditch the interview questions and let the topics choose themselves, and also taught me how to improvise questions while not loosing the theme.

I finally came to the conclusion of the main technologies I wanted to cover; vending machines, rice cookers, and air conditioners. These were three tools that would appear rather frequently in my discussions, but also represented distinct and various sections in technology (such as the private sphere vs the public sphere). While I had many other possibilities, with cell phones being quite crucial, I decided it would make more sense to try and tackle a wider variety of subjects. Through each of these I was able to look at how the ideas of convenience, function, history, and tradition play a crucial role not only in designing artifacts, but in our interactions with them. It feels satisfying to have been able to realize this research, both with the feeling of having developed new knowledge out of my work as well as discovering myself and what aspects I enjoyed through the process.
